Colitis

Feeding for a Happy Gut: Considerations for Dogs with Colitis

Updated over 2 months ago

What is Colitis?

Colitis is when the colon (large intestine) becomes inflamed or irritated. It often leads to bouts of diarrhoea (sometimes with blood or mucus)

What causes it?

Lots of things can trigger colitis, including:

  • Parasites

  • Food intolerances

  • Bacteria or viruses

  • Eating something they really shouldn’t (Labradors, we’re looking at you…)

How can food help?

The right diet can make a big difference. It is recommended to have a diet that is:

  • High in fibre

  • Easy to digest

  • Low in fat

While every dog is different, some of our meals may be a good match for sensitive tums. They contain:

  • Veggies & lentils to support gut health

  • Soluble + insoluble fibre to keep things moving

  • Gentler proteins like Chicken, Turkey, Game, and Veggie

Tailored for sensitive tums

We can personalise your plan to include only our lower-fat meals to help support dogs with colitis.
If your dog has lost a bit of weight, we’d be happy to tailor a recommendation to help bring things back to normal.

Don’t forget to check with your vet

Remember to always chat with your vet before changing your dog’s diet because in more severe cases, some dogs might require anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive medications to manage the root of the problem.
