Thyroid problems can be common in our furry friends, but the good news is we feed many dogs suffering from thyroid issues so your pooch will be in good company.
Thyroid problems fall into two categories called hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism means the thyroid gland is underactive and therefore slows down the metabolism. Hyperthyroidism means the thyroid gland is overactive, which as a result, increases a dog’s metabolism. Most commonly, dogs suffer from hypothyroidism.
Common symptoms of hypothyroidism include:
Weight gain without an increase in appetite
Lethargy and little interest in walking, playing, or chasing a ball
Dry, dull fur that sheds a lot
Fur loss resulting in a very thin coat, which usually doesn’t regrow
Lots of dark pigmentation on the skin
Our meals are nutritionally complete and balanced, so all of our recipes are suitable for dogs with thyroid problems. If weight gain is a concern, as it often can be with dogs suffering from hypothyroidism, we would suggest trying your dog on our leaner turkey, chicken, game and veggie dishes, and our fish treats which all contain less than 6% crude fat.
These will help support your dog to maintain or reach their goal body weight and body condition, if you’ve noticed weight gain. In all cases of different thyroid issues, our meals are easy to digest, high in nutrients and free from any nasties.
