BPA & Phthalates: What You Need to Know
Updated over a week ago

At Butternut Box, your pet's health and safety are always our top priority. We understand that as a responsible pet parent, you're probably just as concerned about what’s outside their meals as you are about what’s inside. That’s why we’ve taken extra care to ensure that our packaging is not only effective in keeping your pet's food fresh but also safe and free from harmful substances like Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates.

What’s in Our Packaging?

We’re proud to confirm that our packaging is completely free from BPA, Bisphenol F (BPF), and Bisphenol S (BPS). We know these chemicals have been a concern in various products, so we’ve taken steps to ensure that your pet’s food packaging is 100% clear of them.

But that’s not all. We also make sure that phthalates—plasticisers often found in other plastics—are not present in any of our packaging. Our packaging has been thoroughly tested, and we can confidently say it doesn’t contain or release any detectable levels of phthalates. This means there’s no risk of these potentially harmful substances leaching into your pet’s food.

Rigorous Testing for Safety

We know it’s not enough to simply say our packaging is safe—we believe in testing and verifying to ensure we’re keeping up with the highest standards. Our packaging is tested under extreme conditions to ensure it’s stable and safe for all types of food, including both fatty and aqueous foods. Whether it’s high heat or long-term exposure to food, we can be sure no harmful substances migrate from the packaging into your pet’s meals.

Here’s how we do it:

  • Migration Testing: We test for the migration of substances by exposing the packaging to temperatures up to 100°C for two hours. This process uses solvents like acetic acid, ethanol, and vegetable oil to mimic real-world conditions. While we cook our meals at just 90° we chose to test this at 100 degrees just to be double-sure.

  • Long-Term Testing: We also test the packaging under more extended conditions to check for any potential leaching of substances over several days.

These tests guarantee that the packaging not only protects your pet’s food but also meets the highest safety standards.

Full Compliance with Regulations

We’re fully committed to ensuring that every aspect of our packaging is safe and compliant with UK and EU regulations. Our packaging adheres to:

  • The Materials and Articles in Contact with Food (England) Regulations 2012 (and equivalent regulations in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland)

  • EU Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 ensuring our packaging materials don’t affect food quality

  • EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 which sets specific safety standards for plastic food contact materials

  • UK REACH regulations which restrict harmful substances in packaging materials

These regulations are just part of our ongoing commitment to transparency, safety, and the well-being of your pet.

Your Peace of Mind

With all these safeguards in place, you can feel confident that when you feed your pet Butternut Box, their meals are protected by packaging that’s both safe and effective. We’re committed to keeping your pet’s food free from any harmful substances, and we’ll continue to monitor and test our packaging materials to ensure the highest levels of safety.
