Butternut meals are delivered frozen in individual pouches. When your delivery arrives, we recommend popping most of the pouches in the freezer and keeping a few in the fridge so that they defrost overnight and are ready to serve.

How do I serve a Butternut meal to my dog?

We're glad you asked!

Choose a pouch from the fridge (whichever recipe your dog fancies) and grab their favourite bowl. Check out our quick video below for the best tips on opening their delicious pouch.

Keeping Meals Fresh: Storage Tips and Feeding Routines

Most dogs need one pouch per day to get all of their calorie requirements, but this can be split into smaller meals.  The meals can be kept unopened in the fridge for up to a week, or two days once opened

We recommend sticking to the feeding routine that works best for you both. For some, this is one meal in the morning and one meal in the evening; in which case, you can serve half a pouch at breakfast then pop the rest back into the fridge for later. It's a good idea to keep open pouches in a Tupperware box for freshness.

Other dogs prefer more regular meals. In this case, you can measure out 1/4 or 1/3 of a pouch with a spoon then pop the rest back into the fridge, and simply top up your dog's bowl as often as you need to.

What if I have more than one dog?

On the My Plan page of your online account, you will be able to see a breakdown of your plan - including information on how much to feed each of your dogs per day.

In most cases, we will combine your dogs' portions and send one pouch to split between them. For example, if you have two dogs and one needs 200g per day while the other needs 300g per day, we will send a 500g pouch rather than individual pouches. This works out a lot cheaper and also reduces plastic waste.

The biggest pouch size we have is 600g so if you have multiple large breed dogs who need more than 600g per day each, we may need to send more pouches. This will all be detailed on the My Plan page of your account and you can also read more about how we work out portions here

What if my dog needs more than 600g per day?

Similar to multiple dog plans, if your dog needs more than 600g of food per day we will send additional pouches. For example, we have a 1000g plan where you feed 2 x 500g pouches per day.

With these plans, we often need to deliver more regularly (such as weekly or bi-weekly rather than monthly) so that you have enough meals for your dog.

A breakdown of how much to feed (whether multiple or individual pouches) can be found on the My Plan page of your account.

What if I have a fussy dog?

We feed a lot of fussy eaters here at Butternut, so you're not alone. There's a whole article with great tips and tricks on fussy eaters here

One thing you can do, even if your dog isn't a fussy eater, is to heat the meals up before serving. This really helps to get the aromas going and a lot of dogs actually prefer their meals this way.

Pop the meal in a microwavable bowl and heat it for 30 second intervals until it's warmed through. You can also do this if you forget to defrost a pouch overnight and need Butternut in a hurry. In this case, we recommend using the defrost setting on the microwave and giving it a stir before serving to make sure it has fully defrosted.
