Fussy Eaters: Quick tips

Is your pup picky with their meals? Tired of throwing full bowls of food in the bin? We can help.

Butternut is ideal for fussy eaters and we've got a fantastic team of in-house veterinary professionals with a wealth of experience in this area.

We're firm believers that fussy eaters aren't bad dogs, they just need a little more encouragement depending on their previous experience with food.

Here are our tried and tested top tips for fussy eaters:

  • Pop the meal in a microwavable dish and warm it up for approximately 30 seconds before serving. This really helps to get the aromas going
  • Add a splash of bone broth or crumble in some treats or baked biscuits for an extra flavour kick
  • Combine two recipes to create a completely new taste. For example, if your pooch isn’t a fan of one recipe, you can try mixing a few spoonfuls of their favourite recipe into the bowl
  • Serve the food in a Kong, puzzle feeder or LickiMat to make mealtimes into a game. You can also use this trick to keep your pooch cool in hot weather
  • Try feeding from a different bowl. For example, if you currently use a metal bowl try a ceramic one, as some dogs don't like the sound of the metal scraping against the floor
  • Experiment with texture. Butternut meals are versatile and can be mashed, cut into cubes, or if you're feeling fancy you can even roll them into meatballs for a special treat
  • Avoid citrus washing up liquid. Dogs aren’t keen on scents such as lemon and orange as these can be overpowering, so try swapping these out for different scents when washing up their bowls
