Here at Butternut, we're passionate about sourcing our meats from farms we trust.
When we say human-quality ingredients, we mean ingredients that have been sourced from the human food supply chain. In other words, ingredients like chicken, beef, carrots or peas that are of such high quality, they can be (and are) used for our own human food. They can be easily traced back to their origins and retain their quality from the moment they’re sourced to when they’re served. This is unlike the ingredients used in many kibble or wet foods, which are often unrecognisable and not fit for human consumption.
We never use meat meals, bone meals or rendered meats - only what’s good enough for us is good enough for our dogs, and we have the most stringent quality controls in place to make sure that our protein is top-notch.
The majority of our meat is sourced from the UK and EU with the exception of our venison, which is seasonal and sometimes needs to be sourced from New Zeland. Our lambs hearts and livers sometimes come from the Southern Hemisphere as well, for the same reason.
Animal welfare is a foundational pillar of our sourcing policy, not an afterthought. We ask every meat supplier to adhere to a stringent set of protocols covering farm management, ethical transport, and humane handling. Additionally, we will not use meat originating from animals reared exclusively to be shot for sport.
The vegetables, lentils, and botanicals that we include in our recipes are from various suppliers and this can change throughout the year based on seasonality of ingredients. Having said that, we always aim to source our ingredients as close to where we need them as possible, such as British wonky veg.
