If you find your pooch is a little on the skinny side, then look no further, we have got it covered! Here at Butternut Box, we provide meals that are calculated to each dog’s needs. Using a combination of the latest scientific literature, the expertise of our veterinary nutrition consultant, and data learning, we have devised our very own "nutritional calculator". This accounts for each dog’s age, weight, breed, body condition score, and activity level. It even adjusts for treats and calculates daily feeding requirements to the closest 50 calories.
Transitioning a dog who needs to gain weight is nice and simple. We'd suggest feeding your dog a very small amount of Butternut initially (a few spoonfuls), mixed in with what they're currently eating. You can gradually increase the amount of Butternut each day, and if your dog has any runny poops then it's often a sign that they need to take things a little slower. Some dogs can take a week or more to move over to Butternut completely, so it's totally fine to go at your own pace here, swapping out their old food as you go until they're on their full daily portion.
Our richer beef, lamb, pork, and duck & chicken recipes all have a higher calorie content. Once your pooch is fully transitioned onto Butternut food then it is a good idea to switch your skinny pooch onto these meals. If your dog is prone to a sensitive tummy then it would be a good idea to slowly transition your pooch onto these meals, one at a time, over a period of 10 days, just to make digestion easier for their gut.
Another way of increasing your dog's overall calorie intake is through treats. All dogs love treats, right? Our Naturally Tasty Tenders are a great option for our skinny pooches as they are an air-dried treat, which contains 90% of either chicken or turkey depending on which you chose, and contain 58 calories per tender.
If you need to discuss your dog's weight gain and needs further, then our friendly in-house Vet Nurse team is always on hand to give some extra tips and advice. You can book a call with them here.
Please note these are feeding guidelines only. We understand you know your pooch best so it's totally understood that you may need to make some changes to suit them.
