What’s changing in our Fresh meals?

Updated over a week ago

Starting July 22nd 2025, we’re updating our packaging and tweaking the recipes of two of our meals in the Netherlands and Belgium. Butternut Box is growing fast (like a puppy, really). As we get bigger, so does our responsibility to the planet and the communities we serve. So, we’ve made a few changes.

Dog food that’s kinder to the planet

As you know, we’re big fans of dogs - and the planet. That’s why we’re proud to be a certified B Corp. As a dog food brand, we take our sustainability commitments seriously and we’ve set ourselves ambitious goals to reduce our CO₂ pawprint. That’s why we’ve decided to reduce the amount of meat in our beef and lamb recipes from 60% to 50%. This change will save around 9,000 metric tonnes of CO₂e over the next five years. That’s the same as 2,949 return flights from Amsterdam to New York*.

Planet-friendly meals with tail-wagging taste

Our fresh beef and lamb meals are well-loved by Butternutters, but they’re not our most sustainable recipes. Beef and lamb production has a bigger environmental impact than the chicken, fish or turkey in our other fresh meals. We’ve replaced the 10% meat with other nutritious, plant-based ingredients so the meals are still complete and balanced. These new recipes have been taste-tested and approved by real dogs on a panel and by more than 30,000 Butternutters in the other European countries we serve. They’re just as tasty, nutritious and easy to digest. So while your dog still gets the same delicious dinner, it’s now that little bit better for the planet too.

Fresh meals in a fresh look

We’re on a mission to serve our Fresh meals to as many dogs across Europe as possible. Good news: where we once started in the UK, Butternut Box is now available in more and more countries, like the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. So, our packaging needs to speak to a few more people. From July 22nd, you'll spot a change on your pouches: the protein – like chicken, salmon or beef – will be written in all Butternut languages to make it easier for our customers. Same tasty meals, smarter new look.
