Fresh Food Has a Higher Digestibility Than Other Pet Foods

How Fresh Butternut Box Meals Stack Up?

Updated yesterday

Our latest studies show that Fresh food has a higher digestibility than other pet foods.

Butternut diets are more digestible than others on the market, meaning fewer nutrients are wasted and passed as poo. This makes our meals ideal for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

Digestibility is largely determined by ingredient quality, quantity fed, and food processing methods - the impact can be seen in the characteristics of each dog’s poo. Diets with low digestibility can lead to larger quantities of poo with loose consistency, while high digestibility results in smaller amounts of drier poo.

We’ve analysed how the digestion of Fresh Butternut meals compares to our competitors, and here’s what we found.

In-home dog studies (2018-2022)

  • Crude protein digestibility - 90-96%

  • Crude fat digestibility - 95-98%

These studies followed FEDIAF kennel digestibility guidelines but with a larger dog population to ensure statistical significance. Butternut Box achieved exceptionally high crude protein digestibility (90-96%) and crude fat digestibility (95-98%) compared to traditional extruded diets (literature reports 70-82% for protein and 75-95% for fat).

World-first in-vitro study (2022)

  • Crude protein digestibility - 90-96%

  • Crude fat digestibility - 95-98%

In collaboration with the TEAGASC research lab, which is world-leading in protein digestibility, we conducted an in-vitro study comparing our meals with those of three leading competitors. This groundbreaking test was a first in dog diets. It supported our in-home dog study findings, demonstrating exceptionally high crude protein digestibility results at 91-96% - surpassing a popular premium brand, a Fresh food provider and a commonly prescribed veterinary gastrointestinal diet.
