Congratulations on the arrival of your new puppy! This exciting, crazy, puppy-filled time is so important, and feeding a balanced, complete diet, tailored to your pup will help support them into adulthood.
It's important to give your puppy plenty of time to settle into their new home before you swap them over to Butternut. Continue to feed them the food they were eating before coming home for at least 2 weeks so that it's not too many changes to cope with at once.
Step 1:
Slow and Steady - puppies need an extra bit of time when it comes to eating a new diet, this is because their gut is still developing and adjusting. Start slowly by introducing a spoonful of Butternut to your dog's old food. If this goes down well, add in another spoonful the next day and gradually increase it over 5-7 days. Be sure to slowly reduce the amount of old food at the same rate until your pup is fully transitioned over to Butternut.
Step 2:
Keep it simple - start with one recipe at a time to give your puppy's gut time to adjust to the new ingredients. If your puppy seems to be on the sensitive side, you can try our leaner chicken, turkey, game, plant and veggie recipes to begin with. These recipes are low fat and easy to digest, making them a great option for puppies.
Step 3:
Routine - finding a feeding routine that works is half the battle with a new puppy. Continue to stick with your existing routine when introducing a new food, this includes the time you feed your little one, the bowl you use, the location you feed them, etc. This will help to make the transition nice and easy for your puppy.
Step 4:
Take a step back - if you notice any tummy upsets, slow it down and take a step back. You can also try splitting the meals into more frequent, smaller portions (4-5) until their poo is back to normal.
Remember to keep us updated with your dog's weight by updating this in your account, and we'll recommend a new portion as and when they need it.
